So if you are looking for ways to help your little one calm down, read on!

For parents of infants, baby colic can be a frustrating and exhausting experience. This condition is characterized by periods of inconsolable crying, often for several hours at a time. While the name ‘colic’ suggests that the crying is due to stomach pain, often stomach treatments have little effect on soothing the crying baby. Many infants outgrow colic or inconsolable crying by the time they are four to six months old, but this can feel like a lifetime to parents! In  the meantime, there are a few things that parents can do to help soothe their baby. If you are struggling to cope with a colicky infant, remember that you are not alone. There are many resources available to help you through this difficult time. Like…

Chiropractic has been shown to help reduce crying and ease colic symptoms

Parents of infants who are dealing with colic can find themselves feeling desperate for relief. Crying episodes can last for hours, leaving both baby and parents exhausted. Chiropractic has been shown to help reduce the frequency and duration of crying episodes. As a result, babies who receive chiropractic treatments tend to experience less discomfort and cry less often. For parents, this can provide much-needed respite from the challenges of caring for a colicky baby.

There are a few different chiropractic techniques that can be used to treat colic

Fortunately, there are a few different chiropractic techniques that can be used to treat colic. Gentle hands-on techniques ease stress and strain in the spine through therapeutic touch and light, gentle movements. Restoring normal motion of the head and neck through simple exercise is another approach to easing the baby’s body and nervous system. With time and patience, these techniques can help to ease the symptoms of colic.

Speak to your pediatrician or chiropractor about whether chiropractic might help your baby

If your baby is having trouble reaching developmental milestones, it may be time to speak to a pediatrician or chiropractor about whether chiropractic could help. Chiropractic is a type of therapy that uses hands-on, gentle techniques as well as exercise to help treat a variety of conditions. For babies, chiropractic can help improve muscle strength and coordination, ease pain, and promote healing. While not all babies will benefit from chiropractic, it may be worth exploring if your child is struggling. If you decide to give it a try, be sure to find a qualified practitioner who has experience working with infants. With the right therapist, chiropractic can be a valuable tool in helping your baby reach their full potential.

Frequently Asked Questions

There is no definitive answer to this question, as the exact cause of colic or inconsolable crying is not known. However, birth injury and trauma or intervention during birth (c-section, forceps or vaccuum assistance) often seem to be related to an irritable baby who is difficult to soothe. By easing the spine and the baby’s body through gentle techniques, a pediatric chiropractor can help calm the baby’s nervous system and help soothe the baby.

Colic and gas can sometimes be difficult to distinguish since it is difficult to tell if the baby’s discomfort is coming from their tummy. Trialing different formulas, trialing different dietary changes, chang or speaking with a lactation consultant about breastfeeding techniques can be helpful to see whether the discomfort is related to their digestion, or tummy, or whether they may have colic. Additionally, babies with colic may exhibit distinct “crying spells” that last for long periods of time, while babies with gas may settle once they have been able to burp or pass gas.

The duration of colic can vary significantly from baby to baby. Most infants begin showing signs of colic by three weeks old and it can last throughout the first year. Most babies seem to improve by about 6 months old if no treatment is successful. The best way to see whether your baby could improve in their crying episodes would be to see a pediatric chiropractor with training in treating infants.
