What Is The Graston Technique and How Does It Work?

Graston Technique (GT) is a phenomenal way to treat scar tissue, knots, muscle spasms, and anything that causes a restricted range of motion that prevents an athlete from performing at their best or anybody else from doing what they love.

The Graston Technique involves a therapist using a surgical stainless steel instrument to work on different musculoskeletal areas in the body.

The rounded edges (not sharp at all) on the instrument allows the clinician to identify problem areas and treat the issue precisely.

Also, it allows the Chiropractor or Physiotherapist to get deep into the tissue which is key to invoking benefits while being sensitive to the patient’s pain.

The therapist will first scan through the problem area with the instrument. What they are looking for is areas that feel gritty or smooth. Many times the gritty areas will become red. This is normal with this technique. Then they will work through the gritty area or restrictive area by using a cross friction massage.

They also use these instruments to identify fibrosis or dysfunctional soft tissues that cause issues.

There are many benefits to using the Graston Technique.

The Ultimate Guide to The Graston Technique

What Are The Benefits Of The Graston Technique?

Faster rehabilitation and recovery time. This includes recovery from surgery or injury.

Reduces the need for anti-inflammatory medications.

Repair and strengthen muscles.

Can resolve conditions that would otherwise be considered permanent.

Other benefits include:

Speeds Up Recovery After Workouts

If you ever experienced soreness or that achy feeling after a tough workout then the Graston technique can help you recover faster. It does this by increasing blood flow to your muscles and funneling in more nutrients to the injured area. This results in faster recovery from workouts.

Speed Up Recovery From Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar Fasciitis is a painful condition that can take several months to fully heal. Graston Technique is a great treatment for this condition because it decreases inflammation, influences scar tissue, reduces pain, and restores the normal range of motion in the foot. Many plantar fasciitis patients see results in as little as one visit.

When it Works, You See Results Fast

As with other treatment options which can take months before you know if it will work or not, with Graston, you’ll know after just 6-12 treatments. Studies have found that Graston Technique is an effective treatment to ease pain and improve function in less than 3 months.

Decreases Pain

The cross friction massage promotes blood flow delivering oxygen and nutrients to the injured area to accelerate healing. This process can also clean up waste and inflammatory chemicals that can slow down healing. This is what makes this technique so effective.

Increase and Restore Normal Range of Motion

Scar tissue, inflammation, and pain can restrict movement in your joints. The Graston Technique can improve these restrictions to allow you to move more freely without restrictions.

How Does It Work?

The therapist uses the instrument to perform a cross-friction massage. This involves rubbing against the scar tissue to reintroduce small amounts of trauma to the problem area. When you do this it triggers a natural healing mechanism.

There are 6 different types of Graston therapy technique Instruments. They are all different sizes and shapes to work on all body parts.
