What Is The Graston Technique and How Does It Work?

Graston Technique (GT) is a phenomenal way to break up scar tissues, knots, muscle spasms, and anything that causes a restricted range of motion that prevents an athletic from performing at their best or anybody else from doing what they love.

How it works is a therapist will use a surgical stainless steel instrument.

The rounded edges (not sharp at all) on the instrument makes it very precise and allows the clinician to identify problem areas and treat the issue much more precisely than they could do with their own fingertips.

Also, it allows the Chiropractor or Physiotherapist to get deep into the tissue which is key to invoking benefits while being sensitive to the patient’s pain.

The therapist will first scan through the problem area with the instrument. What they are looking for is areas that feel gritty and smooth. Many times the gritty areas will become red. This is normal with this technique. Then they will work through the gritty area or restrictive area by using a cross friction massage.

They also use these instruments to identify fibrosis or dysfunctional soft tissues that cause issues.

Plantar Fascitis is a painful condition that can take several months to fully heal. Decreases Pain

The cross friction massage promotes blood flow delivering oxygen and nutrients to the injured area to accelerate healing. This process can also clean up waste and inflammatory chemicals that can slow down healing. This is what makes this technique so effective.

Increase and Restore Normal Range of Motion

Scar tissue, inflammation, and pain can restrict movement in your joints. The Graston Technique can break up these restrictions to allow you to move more freely without restrictions.

Breaks Up Scar Tissue (Graston Technique Scar tissue)

You see, scar tissue naturally occurs after injury which can restrict or slow down the natural healing processes in your body.  When you break up scar tissue as GT does, it allows the natural healing mechanisms in your body to swarm toward the injured area to begin repairing the muscle and soft tissues immediately.

How Does It Work?

The therapist uses the instrument to perform a cross-friction massage. This involves rubbing against the scar tissue to reintroduce small amounts of trauma to the problem area. When you do this it triggers a natural healing mechanism known as an anti-inflammatory response to enhance healing and recovery.
