Vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) is a specialized form of therapy intended to alleviate symptoms caused by vestibular disorders. It is an exercise-based program primarily designed to reduce vertigo and dizziness, visual disturbance, and/or imbalance and falls. After injury to the vestibular system occurs, the central nervous system can compensate for reduced function of the inner ears.
Nerves can become compressed or irritated for various reasons causing their signals to become exaggerated or perceived as painful ones. The result is pain that exists despite having no signs of inflammation or tissue damage.
Another result of neuropathic pain is chronic muscle shortening. Overactivation of the muscle by an irritated nerve causes muscle spasm and chronic muscle shortening. Pain is a result of the shortened muscle pulling on the tendons, straining them as well as distressing the joints they move. Muscle shortening also increases wear and tear and contributes to degenerative changes such as ‘tendonitis’, ‘osteoarthritis’, and degenerative disc problems.
Acupuncture has been used for many centuries. The practice involves inserting and manipulating hair-thin needles into meridian points, channels, guiding flow of Qi (energy of life) on the body. The purpose of acupuncture is generally to stimulate energy points and to balance the energy flow, to alleviate specific symptoms such as pain and discomfort and to activate body repair systems to restore health.
