All of our physiotherapists have extensive experience working with amateur and elite level athletes; they understand the important roles sports and physical activities play in many of our client’s lives. Each of our physiotherapists are personally involved in sports through participation, coaching and/or training.
After an injury occurs during or outside of sports, our physiotherapists will not only help you recover from your injury but also ensure that your rehabilitation gets you back to the level of sport that you were competing at. Treatment will include rehabilitative exercises as well as preventative exercises. Sport specific drills will be included along with core stabilization and strengthening exercises.
The core refers to a group of deep stabilizing muscles in and around your lower back and pelvis that include the diaphragm, transverse abdominis, multifidus, and the pelvic floor muscles. The core muscles do not actually create any specific movement, instead they anticipate the contraction of your body’s large movement muscles. This provides stability to the spinal and pelvic joints so that you are well protected when you initiate a movement.
A strong core not only prevents back injury but also impacts other parts of your body. A healthy core provides a strong base of support for arm and leg movement which can help prevent and rehabilitate hip, knee, ankle, shoulder, elbow and neck injuries.
IMS has been proven to be effective in the treatment of chronic injuries as well as injuries which have not responded to conventional physiotherapy treatment. IMS involves an assessment of the injured area and determination of whether the pain has a neurologic source. The technique involves the insertion of a fine, flexible acupuncture needle into muscles which have become shortened due to abnormal stimulation from the nervous system. The needle causes the muscle to contract, which leads to a reciprocal relaxation and lengthening of the muscle. Nothing is injected into the tissues. Many clients find they are sore for about 24 hours following the treatment, and then report a decrease, or in some cases, complete resolution of their pain symptoms.
There are many reasons for joint replacement surgery. The most common one is osteoarthritis (OA) which results in breakdown of the articular cartilage on the ends of the bones. This can cause stiffness and joint pain. In advanced stages the joint may need to be repaired by joint replacement surgery. Other conditions that that can lead to a damaged joint are Rheumatoid Arthritis, infection of the bone, or a lack of blood supply to the bone due to disease or trauma. In joint replacement surgery the surgeon replaces the diseased joint with an artificial joint (prosthesis).
We offer pre- and post-surgical cancer rehabilitation. Your physiotherapist will set up a program which can help relieve pain and restore movement that may have been lost as a result of cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.
