Female urinary incontinence refers to the involuntary loss of urine, whether it be a small drop or complete emptying of the bladder. It is often experienced during pregnancy and after childbirth as well as later in life with menopause, but it should NOT be considered normal. Statistics show that between 10-30% of women between the ages of 20-55 have experienced urinary incontinence and 1 in 5 women over the age of 45 suffer from urinary incontinence, but only 1 in 12 are known to health care workers. Women are frequently advised to do Kegels or pelvic floor strengthening exercises when these symptoms occur.
Fecal incontinence is the involuntary or inappropriate passage of gas or stool (solid or liquid). The incidence of fecal incontinence in the general population is approximately 2-3%. After childbirth the statistic for fecal incontinence is 7.2% with gas incontinence being up to 29%. Over half of women with fecal incontinence experience urinary incontinence. One or a combination of several factors can lead to fecal incontinence.
Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) occurs when a pelvic organ, such as yourbladder, uterus, rectum, or small intestine drops (prolapses) from its original position, and herniates into the vagina or rectum. It is generally secondary to changes in integrity of the ligaments and supporting connective tissue structures. Generally the pelvic floor muscles are found to be affected in these situations with poor recruitment, weakness and/or altered tone. Prolapse affects 50% of women that have had children. Approximately 11% of all females require at least one corrective surgical procedure during their lifetime.
The prostate is a gland that is a part of the male reproductive system. It is a small walnut shaped gland that wraps around the male urethra near the bladder. Medical conditions specific to the prostate include:
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a nonmalignant enlargement of the prostate gland, a common occurence in older men.
Acute and chronic bacterial prostatitis is inflammation of the prostate gland due to an infection. Research demonstrates 10-12% of all men experience prostatitis symptoms.
Chronic prostatitis (non-bacterial) is also termed chronic pelvic pain syndrome. It can be described as inflammatory or non-inflammatory and often no specific causes can be identified.
Pelvic pain refers to any discomfort relating to the pelvic region. There are numerous muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, organs, joints, and connective tissue in the pelvic region. Often with pelvic pain the muscles of the pelvic floor are overlooked. Tension or trigger points in the hip and/or low back muscles, restrictions in the fascia, altered signals in the nervous system, disease or dysfunction in the organs, and changes in joint mobility can all be a source of pelvic pain.
Pelvic pain can also result from tailbone injuries, low back injuries, hip injuries/replacements, groin strains, hernia repairs, abdominal surgeries, vasectomy and pelvic fractures.
Pudendal neuralgia, also known as Alcock’s syndrome” or pudendal canal syndrome, refers to pain originating from irritation of the pudendal nerve. The pudendal nerve originates in the pelvis and provides sensory and motor innervation to the muscles and tissue of the pelvic floor. It has 3 branches that innervate , the front, middle and back of the pelvic floor. Irritation of one of the branches or the nerve root as a whole can cause pain in its respective area, including the rectum, anus, urethra, perineum, clitoris, mons pubis, vulva, labia and lower 1/3 of the vagina. It also may cause referral of pain or altered sensation down the back of the leg.
