Physiotherapists are experts on movement and function. We are university-trained and have advanced understanding of how the body moves, what keeps it from moving and how to restore mobility. Think of physiotherapists as your body mechanics: we keep you moving for life.
At Active Living Physiotherapy your therapist works as part of a team, communicating with you and your other health-care providers or coaches/trainers. The success of your physiotherapy program requires your commitment: you will probably be required to participate in an exercise program or some modifications to your postural or lifestyle habits. Your dedication to this homework will help you improve more quickly and achieve your goals as soon as possible.
Kinesiologists are much more than a personal trainer. We hold a university Bachelor Degree in Kinesiology (which is the study of human movement) and have an in-depth understanding of human anatomy and proper movement patterns as well as the science behind different training types and intensities.
Whether it is a one-on-one session or a group program, your goals, health history and health conditions will be considered in every exercise or workout prescribed.
With exercise you will develop your overall fitness, strength, you will notice improved mental health, and morale. You will also improve your sleep and concentration.
Vestibular rehabilitation involves the assessment and treatment of dizziness, vertigo, imbalance and inner problems such as BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Position Vertigo or BPPV). Symptoms due to vestibular disorders can diminish quality of life and impact all aspects of daily functions. Many patients are unaware that this debilitating problem can be easily treated and most commonly cured!
VRT begins with a comprehensive assessment that includes a detailed history of the patient’s symptoms as well as information on medication, hearing or vision problems, history of falls, and activity level. From there, the physiotherapist will decipher, through a series of special tests, what is the root cause of the problem, and look at secondary problems as a result of the vertigo or dizziness (inactivity, loss of strength, stamina or mobility.)
Dry needling is a technique physiotherapists use for the treatment of pain and movement impairments. The technique uses a “dry” needle, one without medication or injection, inserted through the skin into a trigger point of a tight muscle. Other terms commonly used to describe dry needling, include trigger point dry needling, and intramuscular stimulation.
A trigger point is a taut band of skeletal muscle located within a larger muscle group. Trigger points can be tender to the touch, and touching a trigger point may cause pain to other parts of the body.
