Physiotherapists are primary health care professionals with a significant role in health promotion and treatment of injury and disease. They combine their in-depth knowledge of the body and how it works with specialized hands-on clinical skills to assess, diagnose and treat symptoms of illness, injury or disability (derived from the Canadian Physiotherapy Association). Your assessment with the physiotherapist will include an extensive biomechanical assessment of your injury which will allow a diagnosis to be made. The physiotherapist will educate you on your injury or condition and work with you to create a treatment plan based on your goals. Physiotherapists have a variety of tools they can utilize in order to help you achieve your recovery goals.
Massage therapy consists primarily of hands-on manipulation of the soft tissues of the body, specifically, the muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments and joints for the purpose of optimizing health. Massage therapy treatment has a therapeutic effect on the body and optimizes health and well being by acting on the muscular, nervous and circulatory systems. Physical function can be improved by reducing the tone of injured, sore or compensating muscles, increasing circulation and reducing stress. Physical dysfunction and pain and the numerous effects of stress can be relieved or even prevented through the use of massage therapy. Massage therapists use their knowledge of anatomy and physiology to combine traditional Swedish massage and other therapies like cupping and stretching to treat their clients.
Chiropractic is a safe and effective treatment for many common complaints involving the muscles and joints of the spine and extremities and can help restore, maintain or improve your strength, function, and movement. Treatment may include adjustments, mobilizations, soft tissue techniques, acupuncture, stretching, and strengthening exercises. Once your chiropractor has provided you with a diagnosis and answered any questions you may have, you will receive a treatment plan completely designed to accommodate your goals and needs.
Acupuncture is an ancient form of Chinese medicine involving the insertion of needles into the skin at specific points on the body to create a therapeutic effect. Acupuncture more recently has become a treatment modality used commonly in western medicine. Acupuncture has been shown to have positive effects on many conditions including:
Acupuncture needles are very fine and flexible which allows them to be inserted with little to no discomfort. Your physiotherapist may recommend using acupuncture as part of your treatment to help speed your recovery.
