WHAT IS THE GLA:D PROGRAM?

GLA:D Canada is a 7-week education and experience program for those with stiff and/or painful knees and/or hips, or those with knees and/or hip osteoarthritis. Research from GLA:D in Denmark shows participants report less pain, reduce the use of painkillers, fewer individuals on sick leaves, and being physically active.

GLA:D® is an exercise program, originally developed in Denmark, for those with hip or knee osteoarthritis. The Danish program was called “Good Life with Osteoarthritis in Denmark” and abbreviated GLA:D®.

The GLAD program was launched in Denmark in 2013 with the aim to implement guidelines to facilitate the highest quality of care based on the most up-to-date research. There have been over 50,000 people participating in the program since its inception. Several measurements for each participant have been taken both before and after the program. These results have shown a reduction in symptoms of 32%. Other outcomes include:

  • reduction in pain intensity
  • reduced use of pain medications
  • increased levels of physical activity
  • delayed surgery or prevention of surgery
  • fewer individuals on sick leave

Yes! Because all sessions are led by a physiotherapist they can be submitted to your extended benefits provider for reimbursement as part of your physiotherapy coverage.

Check with your extended benefits provider to see if you have coverage for physiotherapy. Many plans cover physiotherapy however amounts vary so check with your provider to confirm coverage. We are able to direct bills and electronically submit your claim to most insurance companies for your convenience. Please have all your insurance information with you at your appointment.

Yes, the results of the pilot study that took place in 2017 are published in the journal BioMed Central (BMC) Pilot & Feasibility Studies. The ongoing results are documented and made publicly available in newsletters, annual reports and scientific articles.
